DescriptionVolute, knop, and shaft are united by an inner core. The shaft is decorated with three appliqued, vertical dragons and rinceaux in reserve against an azure blue enameled background. The backs of the appliqued dragons are decor- ated with turquoise studs. Each half of the openwork knop has a frieze of four intertwined, bipedal, winged dragons. The eyes are inset with black beads. There is a band studded with turquoise around the center of the knop between the two friezes. The decorative "colorette" which belongs around the bottom of the volute has been lost. The volute takes the form of a stylized dragon terminating in the head, with crocketing along the outside. It is enameled in azure blue. In the center of the volute the winged St. Michael appears with a lance and a circular shield. His and the dragon's eyes are inset with black beads. The outside of the curve of the volute is joined to the vertical section by a curling ten- dril terminating in a flower and a berry. The gilding is modern and there are small losses to the enamel on the shaft.
