Description

The group depicts a Chinese Emperor seated on a throne under a draped and scrolled baldachin raised up on a stepped dais. The emblems of the arts -- palette and brushes for painting, sculpted head and chisels for sculp- ture, bell for music, and square, compass and protractor for architecture -- can be found on the steps of the dais. On the left is the figure of an artist, who originally held a paper with pseudo-Chinese writing on it. On the right a courtier presents to the Emperor a poet holding a book and wearing a laurel

wreath.
